Put SOAP into Practice

Let’s put SOAP into practice today. You can use this PDF or utilize your own journal. Let’s use 1 John 3.11-4.20.

Scripture - Read the Bible

  1. Read 1 John 3.11-4.20 here or in your own translation.

  2. Read that text 4 more times for a total of 5 times.

  3. Pick a verse or two that stuck out to you and write them out.

Observation - Ask questions about the verses that you’ve written out

  1. Who wrote it? Who did they write it to?

  2. When was it written?

  3. Where was it written? Where was it going?

  4. Why was it written?

  5. What is going on in the verse or passage?

Application - Think about what this verse(s) means in your life now

  1. How do you need to live as a result of what you’ve read?

  2. What needs to change in your life after reading these verses?

  3. What do you need to do after working through these verses?

Prayer - Talk to God

Here is a simple acronym that helps me pray.

  • Adoration - Adore God for his characteristics for who He is.

  • Confession - Confess your sins to God. Say the same thing He says about them as they are brought into the light.

  • Thanksgiving - Give thanks to God for what He has done in your life.

  • Supplication - Beg God for the things heavy on your heart.

  • Silence - Spend a few minutes in silence considering and contemplating what God might be saying to you.
